3 ways to nurture yourself when you’re feeling overwhelmed

Nourish yourself through overwhelm with yoga, relaxation and meditation

The to-do list is too long. The emails keep coming. That oh so 21st century phenomenon of FOMO (fear of missing out) is gnawing at your soul.

There’s so much going on in your life that you’re not getting chance to give yourself that precious quiet, me-time that you know in your bones that you need to keep functioning, let along enjoy life!

I know how you feel. Putting pressure on yourself to do everything and do it perfectly and do it now.  To read every interesting book, follow up every interesting article on social media, to just be Ms Perfect.

And I know where it leads. To overwhelm. To a feeling of nervous-system  overload and exhaustion. To a mind which can’t focus, a digestive system which can’t digest, and a body which can’t rest.

Give yourself what you need

I’ve been there – and can all so easily find myself going in that direction again!

When your mind is feeling overwhelmed with all the demands on your time and attention and your body feels over-stimulated by your surroundings, it’s time to stop.

Stop, take stock. And give yourself permission to rest and nurture yourself.

Yes, give yourself permission. No-one else can do this for you. It’s your choice.

If you take some deep breaths, place your hand on your heart and ask your inner wisdom to guide you it will tell you – because it yearns for this –  to stop, and look after yourself. It’s time to listen.

So, here are three ways to nurture your body, mind and soul to help you to look after yourself when you’re feeling overwhelmed, to bring you into a place of greater calm and equanimity.

I’ve tried and tested these techniques on many an occasion!

Nurture your body

Try this flowing sequence of mindful movements to release tension from the whole of your body and to encourage a deep, smooth breath to activate your body’s parasympathetic nervous system – the Rest & Digest response which puts your body into healing mode.

Nurture your mind

Sit or lie-down for this one.

You’re going to work with your mind to use its wonderful power and focus to relax your whole being.

Nurture your soul

Show yourself Loving Kindness – nourish your heart and soul

Loving-Kindness meditation connects to your heart and nourishes your soul to promote feelings of love, gentleness and connection.

Sit comfortably – and repeat these phrases over and over to yourself:

  • May I be filled with Loving-Kindness.
  • May I be healthy.
  • May I be happy.
  • May I be at ease.
  • May I be free.

I hope these techniques help you to find ease in your body and peace with your mind when you know in your bones that you need to relax and unwind.

Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti. Peace, peace, peace.
