Do you sit for hours a day? Working at your desk, typing, focusing intently at the screen.
Hours go by and you realize you’ve barely moved.

And by the end of the day your shoulders are up around your ears and so tense, your neck is aching, your back feels like the handle of broom – not like it’s made up of 24 moving vertebrae!

So many of us are forced to sit for long periods because it’s the nature of our job (and then we sit all evening watching TV, or reading, or glued to our laptop of mobile device). And the result is back pain and low energy levels.

The effects of  sitting

Many people who come to my yoga classes tell me of their aches, pains and niggles in their shoulders, neck and back and know it’s from sitting for long periods. From the hunched up feeling of being glued to the screen.

But also, when you’re sitting a long time, the circulation slows, the electrical activity in your legs slows, you breathe more shallowly.

And studies have linked excessive sitting with being overweight and obese, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, cardiovascular problems and premature death.
Prolonged sitting is also thought to slow the metabolism, which affects the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, blood pressure and break down body fat. Many adults in the UK spend more than seven hours a day sitting or lying, and this typically increases with age to 10 hours or more. (According to the NHS.)

Blimey, that’s all sounds a bit scary!

Now, I’m all about empowering you to help yourself.

So, I’ve made some videos – some Chair Yoga videos – to help you bring mindful movement into your day, every day. At work or at home.

All you need is the willingness to give yourself some much-needed attention … and letting go of worrying what other people in the office might think you’re up to – share the videos with them and get them moving too!
