What annoys you about other people? What makes you angry or frustrated? What acts that you see perpetrated against others sadden you?

What do you think needs to change in the world to make it a better place?

Perhaps you think there should be more compassion, more honesty, less game-playing, less division. Maybe you think individuals need to take more responsibility for their health and their lives or maybe you think that there should be more support provided for people who are disadvantaged.

We all have our own opinions about our friends, family and colleagues; about our workplaces; about the society we live in.

This can lead to going though life passively judging and complaining.   (And I’m not judging anyone by saying that – I know I have done that myself!)

It’s not surprising we often feel powerless. We’re treated as passive consumers by the blitz of marketing we’re forced to navigate through every day of our lives. Our trust in politicians and public bodies has been eroded by numerous scandals and stories of collusion and corruption.

It can all add up to feeling powerlessness to do anything about it.

But if we stop and look at our own lives and how we live them and take positive steps to improve the way we live our lives, then perhaps we can reverse this tide of powerlessness and claim some strength and control back.

What change do you want to see?

Identify what you’d like to change in your world, or in wider society, and take a few moments to see how you can embody that.

Are you fed-up with lies? Then tell the truth.

Does seeing fear in others sadden you? Then strive to be courageous in what you do and say.

Do you want to see peace? Stop fighting against yourself. Accept yourself as you are – stop the struggle within.

Are you sick of game-playing and politics at work? Then don’t get caught up in politicking yourself. Don’t indulge in gossip. Be honest and straightforward.  I know this can be tough if you’re going against the prevailing workplace culture, but for your peace of mind and sense of self-worth, choose to act in a way which is authentic to your higher self.

Do you want to see an end to scandal and dishonesty in public life? Then be truthful and upstanding in your life. Maybe see how you can contribute to the public good and take action. Volunteer with a local organisation or give money / time / goods to charity.

Feel powerless to change anything?

Know that you can make a difference.  You can change your own world for a start.

I know that I have changed my own life and I relate this directly to having discovered a yoga practice 13 years ago.

Yoga helps us to release blocked energy in our bodies.  As we move and strengthen our bodies we become more in touch with our physical sense of self. And, over time, we begin to notice subtle changes.  We notice we’re beginning to move more freely.  We notice we feel stronger yet more flexible.

We come to understand that it’s in our power to change how we feel physically.

Then this may begin to resonate on more subtle levels.

As we become more connected to our physical sense of self, we may begin to notice how our thoughts and emotions affect our body.

As we feel stronger yet freer physically, we may become able to notice and slowly release negative thought patterns.

We begin to feel empowered to change our sense of self – to shed thoughts about what we thought we were and should be and begin to connect to a sense of a bigger picture / a higher purpose.

As the everyday worries and struggles begin to lose their grip on us, we feel freer and larger. We stand in our power. We feel the true confidence that is deep within each of us.

We know we can effect positive change.  We no longer tell ourselves we’re not good enough / not powerful enough.

Stand in your power

If we start to be that change we want to see it will cause a ripple effect.

Our family, friends and colleagues will feel it – consciously or unconsciously.  We may come across resistance from those around us as we change and grow.  But actually they may be inspired to make small or large changes themselves – in turn connecting with their family, colleagues and friends. And so it goes on.

Simply by smiling at a stranger, who knows what positive effects will ripple out from that one act?

Please, never feel powerless. I’ve been there, done that.  It hurts.

Learn to stand in your power – your beauty, your compassion, your ability to change the world for the better.
